ABOUT US

The Knowing Project is a cultural initiative that harnesses the transformative power of traditional African knowledge systems, culture, and the arts to generate new perspectives on how we understand ourselves, others, and the world around us. Our programs are designed to promote social and emotional wellbeing through culturally grounded, immersive, and embodied learning experiences.

Based in Melbourne, Australia and founded by award-winning artist and researcher Lamine Sonko, The Knowing Project draws on a rich lineage of African socio-emotional philosophies—knowledge systems that are deeply rooted in practices of connection, identity, belonging, and purpose. These traditions recognise music and the arts as not only expressive forms but as vital tools for community cohesion, healing, and education.

Our approach is informed by interdisciplinary research developed in collaboration with cultural elders, community members, and academic partners. Through this collaborative framework, we deliver learning experiences that foster emotional intelligence, intercultural understanding, and resilience in both individuals and communities.
