Secondary School Programs

Our programs for secondary schools promote Social Emotional Learning and activate an awareness of cultural diversity and equity. We use African music and cultural stories to develop students’ social awareness and self-awareness and to promote social inclusion and respect for diversity.

UNDER THE BAOBAB TREE

PROGRAM focus:

4 week program that introduces students to the SEL competencies of Self-Awareness Social Awareness and promotes an understanding and respect for cultural diversity and equity using the tools of African drumming and percussion. These competencies are implemented through a combination of group musical practice and cultural storytelling. It includes the development of a memorable group performance that can be shared with the school and wider community.

Duration:

  • 4 x 50 minute sessions delivered over 4 weeks

Suitable For:

  • Yrs 7 - 11

AFRICAN ORCHESTRA

MUSIC & PERFORMANCE PROGRAM

PROGRAM focus:

A program that develops students’ abilities in traditional West African music including technique and performance skills. The program explores drumming, percussion, song, history and cultural knowledge with a focus on developing student’s music expression and improvisation in performance. It includes the composition and arrangement of a memorable student ensemble performance suitable for your school graduation or end of term concert.

Duration:

  • 4 x 50 minute sessions delivered over 4 weeks

  • Group performance item suitable for school graduation or concert.

RHYTHM FOR RESILIENCE

WORKSHOP FOCUS:

This session introduces students to African music and drumming patterns. Students learn about how to work together to create a positive environment and balance feelings. Students learn about engaging with diverse cultures in ways that recognise commonalities and differences, create connections with others and cultivate mutual respect.

  • 50 minutes
